JEAN-BAPTISTE LULLY

Jean-Baptiste Lully
COMING SOON!

Lots of titillating posts on Baroque Trailblazer Jean-Baptiste Lully are coming soon to unravelingmusicalmyths.blogspot.ca

I will be continuing to add a fruitful supply of biographies and riveting historical profiles on well and lesser-known composers and other musicians of the Western Classical Genre - all of which I have written based on my knowledge of this musical sector and from my modern perspective - as I add new updates to my blog.

In the interim, for those seeking a little Lully in their day, check out this exquisite rendition of the effervescent "Te Deum", as orchestrated by Les Arts Florissants Ensemble, performing exclusively on period-instruments and under the baton of conductor and Baroque aficionado William Christie.

For those new to the splendiferous world of baroque, I cannot recommend Christie and his ensemble highly enough.

Formed in France in 1979 by the aforementioned conductor with the intent of bringing an 'authentic' sound and feel to works composed in the era of Baroque through it's use of instruments originally available at the time of each composition, this small chamber orchestra (which also features a vocal ensemble) is as close as the modern listener can get to hearing music of this exciting period in it's original form, experiencing compositions as they would have been heard by audiences over four hundred years ago:

...and equally gifted conductor of the baroque repertoire, Christophe Rousset and his celebrated Les Talens Lyriques ensemble also share an interest in period-instrumentation.

Below Rousset takes to the Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors) at the breathtakingly beautiful Château de Versailles (Palace of Versailles) in France for an unforgettable evening of Parisian delights as he leads Les Talens Lyriques in a deliciously jaunty performance of (and my personal favorite of the Italian-born French composer) Jean-Baptiste Lully's "Pasacaille:"
